You may be forgiven for thinking this picture is of an up scale modern design office somewhere in New York or London, but you’d be wrong! This amazing space is actually the Mogeen Hair Salon and Hair School in Vijzelgracht, Amsterdam.
Due to recent excavation of the North/South metro-line (train line) in Vijzelgracht, the foundation of the building had to be reconstructed, so a former hearth boutique was converted into a modern hair salon and hair school.
To accommodate the hair school and have enough square meterage for the chairs, a roof was built over the courtyard.
The resulting retail space has been redesigned so that many of the basic construction requirements serve dual purpose, for example the exposed heating system’s copper piping were used as heated towel rails.
This is a fantastic example of re-purposing an old building and turning it into a new, modern day functional structure. The design and atmosphere of the salon are both modern, relaxing and chic. The designers also tried to make the customer feel at home by including a large comfortable wraparound oval sofa, a dining table loaded with food as well as pantry that has been built into a bookcase that contains magazines and other literature.
What an amazing space to learn the trade of hairdressing & interact with customers who are looking for a radically new hairdressing experience, who’s the luckier one experiencing this amazing space, the customer or the hairdresser?
