January’s storms, the start of the working year and the first fashion shows of the season have made it an even busier month than usual for London’s taxi firms. Everyone wants a ride, and competition for passengers has never been fiercer.
That’s because London, home of the original, old-fashioned black cab driven by a grumpy fella with The Knowledge, has become the unlikely test bed for the most advanced new taxi services in the world.
The city’s large, liberalised market with clear rules and regulations, growing population, complicated geography and no 24-hour Tube is attracting entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley, Tel Aviv, Russia and, well, London.
