As a self confessed “Devil’s Advocate”, with a preference for contrasting textures placed side by side, Cal Lane’s career choice doesn’t really come as a surprise, especially when you find out she creates delicate metal lace sculptures from wheelbarrows, oil drums, metal pipes and I-Beams. These delicate sculptures form three dimensional installations at places like Museum of Lace Manufacturers in Retournac, France and they manage to represent the height of femininity, in the lace and the strength of masculinity. All of Cal’s work has meticulous skill and attention to detail, as can be seen in some of the pictures below.
After receiving her welding certification when she successively completed a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design(NSCAD) in 2001, and a MFA from the State University of New York at Purchase (2005), Lane has exhibited her work nationally and internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (2002-03), the Textile Museum of Canada (2006), the Museum of Art and Design (New York, 2007), Musea Brugge (Belgium, 2008) and the DeCordova Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts (2008-10).
