Using 2 different methods to create his sculptural artwork, Mark Doolittle produces amazing carvings. Sometimes he examines a piece of wood for weeks and allows the burl, grain and natural patterns of the wood to dictate what the sculpture will eventually look like. At other times, he creates very detailed plans and drafts that he also draws directly onto the wood as a guide when he carves freehand.
I would love to be this creative, his wooden sculptures are intricate and beautiful. I especially love the Earth Mother carving, it looks like an Orthodox Madonna head with halos and a serene expression on her face.
