The beginnings of a cob pizza oven

As a hardcore fan of all kinds of bread and wood fired pizza, Ziggy (Brian Liloia), author of A Year of Mud the book and the blog, wanted to see if he could build a wood fired pizza oven with the same methods and materials he had used to build his first house, mud & cob. Cob is an ancient mixture of sand, clay, and straw, mixed by foot, and then applied by hand to form massive walls, used by various indigenous people to construct houses, and various other buildings before cement was used so widely.
