LuminAID Inflatable Lighting

In 2010, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Anna Stork and Andrea Sreshta got together and decided that there needed to be a lighting solution that could be easily and simply set up when utilities like electricity were not available.

They developed the LuminAID, a solar-powered lighting solution that was portable, lightweight waterproof and could float.

Eliminator Manual Shredder

The Eliminator by Merve Kahraman is a desk lamp that uses shredded paper as its shade. It allows the user to totally customise the lamp depending on what paper the user chooses to shred.

At the base of the lamp is a plate that catches the discarded paper for easy disposal.

Literal Green Lamp

This lamp by Suzanna Malinowski is a delightful fusion of pot plant and table lamp. The base of the lamp acts as the pot from which a plant grows, the plant then influences the light that is emitted, simulating the dappled shade of a forest glade inside your home.

Soda Pop Lamp

I absolutely love the idea of taking what you would normally throw away and making it into a functional piece of furniture or art in your home. So when I saw this, I was smitten! The lamp was made using discarded soda pop ring pulls, bent and manipulated to interlock with each other to  frame the shade. The site is in Chinese, but the pictures are fairly easy and self explanatory.

Double Duty Lampshade

I love anything that can serve double duty, like a table that folds into a partition, or a cell phone cover with space for your cards and ID. This lampshade from Czech designer Krystyna Pojerova certainly does that. It was developed with the modern desire to grow herbs in the kitchen. The lack of space meant that the herbs would have to be hung from the ceiling. Such an innovative design surely deserves to be put into production.

Glowing Radiator Lamps

Steve Faletti has made a radiator that radiates light instead of heat, and to keep it true to its roots as a water based appliance, the light switch is a water spigot. This unusual home fitting is bound to be a hit with people who are looking for an alternative lamp for their living room.

The design was featured on Yanko Design and Kastormag

Valentines Heart Wall Lamp

This wonderful DIY is brought to us by Jeromina from Paper Plate and Plane. It’s an adorable Valentines Heart wall lamp that, with Jeromina’s instructions, is really simple and easy to make. All you need are a red LED lights that you might have left over from Christmas, or that might be going on special from Christmas (either way, it’s gonna be cheap), and your choice of plywood, foam board or some other material to mount your lights.

Choose your mounting material wisely according to whether the lamp is going to be handled a lot and whether it is low enough to be reached by children.
